Can German Shepherds Live in Apartments?

What to Know About Big Dogs In Small Spaces

Living in apartments has never stopped pet lovers from giving a home to their beloved dogs.

But with the German Shepherd, it’s not quite as simple.

Bigger dogs need bigger things.

So with a German Shepherd, you’re also going to need a big dog bed, big dog crate, big dog food bags, and more.

But does a big dog like a German Shepherd need to live in a bigger space?

German Shepherds Living in Apartments

As long as you have the time and are committed to:

  • Taking your dog for walks
  • Having play sessions
  • Thoroughly tiring your GSD out each day

Then it really doesn’t matter if the place you both come home to is big or small.

Does Your Apartment Building Allow German Shepherds?

Sometimes apartments may make their own rules about which dog breeds are permitted on the property.

So it’s always best to look into this prior to bringing home a German Shepherd.

Will Your German Shepherd Fit Into Your Apartment?

The typical adult German Shepherd weighs between 50 and 90 pounds and stands anywhere from 22 to 26 inches tall.

That could be a tight fit in a one-bedroom apartment!

You’ll need about 4-5 feet of empty floor space to house your German Shepherd.

But, if you can get a bigger apartment – with two bedrooms or more – this will become much less of a worry.

Rental Agreements & Leases

You’ll also need to consider the terms of your lease agreement and the penalties for structural damage inside your unit.

Teething puppies may chew on baseboards, doors, or cabinetry.

And don’t forget that German Shepherds who get bored in a confined space are far more destructive.

What German Shepherds Need to Live Happily in an Apartment

The key to living happily with a GSD in a small space is making sure that your dog gets plenty of mental and physical exercise.

Aim for at least 30 to 60 minutes of moderate training, exercise, and interactive playtime daily.

Apartment-Friendly German Shepherd Exercise & Activity Ideas

The best activities will combine both mental and physical exertion, and some great examples include:

  • Breaking up walks into several smaller sessions daily
  • Canine Puzzle Toys
  • Tug-of-war
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Going over training commands
